Cindy Sherman Debuts Fabric Matrons on Savile Row, Built Partly From Chanel's Archive
Cindy Sherman's new Fabric Matrons series opened at Hauser & Wirth, 23 Savile Row, on 13 October and runs to 23 December, partly using Chanel's archive.
Cindy Sherman has opened a new body of work at Hauser & Wirth London, 23 Savile Row, from 13 October to 23 December. The show debuts the series 'Fabric Matrons': photographs that use draped fabric to explore identity as a construction that goes on across a lifetime, with the subjects seeming to merge into their surroundings. The listing says the works 'examine how women negotiate visibility in different phases of life'.
Many pieces incorporate fabrics and other elements drawn from Chanel's extensive archives. The gallery, via ArtRabbit, traces Sherman's collaboration with Chanel back to her Ominous Landscapes series of 2010 to 2012, in which characters wore archival garments and accessories. The gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00 to 18:00.
The timing is Frieze week: Hauser & Wirth is one of eight galleries showing at both Frieze London and Frieze Masters, USA Art News reports.
For anyone who shoots portraits, the lesson is that every element of the frame is chosen: fabric, light, background, expression. Our guide to studio portrait lighting starts from the light and works outwards.
