Berlin, Argerich and Rattle: The Proms Enter Their Closing Run

The BBC Proms are into the closing stretch — 86 concerts since 17 July, 72 of them at the Royal Albert Hall and 14 elsewhere in the UK, finishing with the Last Night on Saturday 12 September. The next seven days carry as much wattage as any week of the season.

The Berliner Philharmoniker are here for two nights under Kirill Petrenko. They opened last night with Elgar's 'Enigma' Variations and Tchaikovsky's Fourth. Tonight at 7pm it is Beethoven's Violin Concerto with Augustin Hadelich, then Scriabin's Third. The orchestra files both dates under 'Festival tour BBC Proms, London' and flags them 'On tour'; tickets run £35.66 to £114.20.

Two nights of the Berlin Philharmonic, Argerich on the Saturday, Rattle on the Monday — one hall, one week.

Then it keeps coming. Tomorrow brings the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic under Andrew Manze with Simone Lamsma, including the world premiere of Carmel Smickersgill's 'A Brick Thrown with Love'. On Saturday, Martha Argerich plays Beethoven's Second with the Munich Philharmonic under Lahav Shani, recorded for BBC TV and iPlayer. Sunday carries two: John Wilson and Sinfonia of London with soprano Julie Roset at 11am, then Jess Gillam, Ben Goldscheider and Sheku Kanneh-Mason with the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Sakari Oramo at 7.30pm, premiering Gwilym Simcock's Triple Concerto. On Monday, Sir Simon Rattle conducts Schumann with the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra and Isabelle Faust.

Last night carried a late shift too: a 10.15pm Prom billed 'Steve Reich at 90' — Reich's Tehillim set against early sacred music by Hildegard of Bingen, Machaut, Josquin and Perotin, from The Gesualdo Six and the Colin Currie Group. Worth knowing that the title is a season-long strand rather than a birthday party: Reich was born on 3 October 1936, so he turns 90 next month.
